The Good, The Bad, and the Kindle?

The Amazon Kindle - Books in 60 seconds

Amazon love books so why not go wireless?
There's plenty of debate on why? What's the difference between a paperback and carrying a device that needs charging. In the end it's up to the consumer, but the US has embraced wireless reading.

The Good:

It's slim, lighter than a typical book, you can download texts using the wireless 3G network - free. The battery will last you a week with wireless - without for up to 2 weeks and you can access social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.Newspapers and magazines from around the globe are accessible and the screen is 6" and reader friendly - no glare even in direct sunlight.

The Bad:

You still pay for texts, but it is cheaper than most book, particularly New Releases.
Price: if you're not an avid reader the cost will take a while to recoup. At around US$200, it's definitely a luxury item.

The Kindle Lowdown:

It uses electricity, albeit on a small scale, and has electronic devices, but what minimal carbon footprint it may leave may still be less than that of millions of glossy magazines, printing presses and glossy book sleeves. And can you snuggle up in bed reading a kindle the way you can with a battered paperback? Will the sand render it useless at the beach? What on Earth do you buy the fussy friend or rellie that has everything if you can't buy them a book? Last but not least - what about those days of walking into Borders and breathe in the heady scent of books and coffee and shamelessly whittle away hours browsing the aisles?

This one is very much up to consumer choice.

iPAD for Students

IPAD

Remember hauling a backpack full of books up the hill from the train station every day after school ? How we would have loved a device that downloaded and stored all of the information we needed for our education.

A Melbourne school is doing just that. Melbourne's Brighton Grammar is testing the IPAD as part of an e-learning research program.

John Phillips, the school's community education director as said, "With one device we've replaced textbooks, we've replaced the student diary, we've replaced the need for a graphics calculator."

With the introduction of interactive whiteboards several years ago, and the quantity and quality of IT facilities available in schools nationwide, it's no surprise that this is being tested for students future schooling.

The Internet is Big Business

It's been 40 years since the internet and my how it has changed.

We use it at home, work from our phones and laptops; but just how is Australia doing in the internet stakes.

How we size up

According to IWS, the top 5 countries with the most internet users are:

1 - China (298,000,000 users, or 22.4% of their population)
2 – US (227,190,989, or 74.7%)
3 – Japan (94,000,000, or 73.8%)
4 – India (81,000,000, or 7.1%)
5 – Brazil (67,510,400, or 34.4%)

Australia comes in at 25th, with 16,926,015 internet users.

But we zoom all the way up to 7th place if we measure what percentage of the population uses the internet – a whopping 80.6 per cent, according to IWS.

Human fossils found with Google Earth

Google Earth Pinpoints 500 new archaeology sites.

The discovery of the fossil remains of some of mankind's earliest ancestors was made possible by the use of data collected via Google Earth.

Professor Lee Berger, from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, discovered the new species, dubbed Australopithecus sediba, in the Cradle of Humankind National Park in South Africa.

The area has been much explored over the years, but Professor Berger began tagging sites with fossil remains on Google Earth in May 2008 and using the images to identify new cave systems.

Professor Berger was able to identify almost 500 new caves and potential fossil sites.

Up until that point there were only 130 known cave sites in the region and around 20 fossil deposits.

"Professor Berger has used Google Earth and its global coverage of high resolution satellite data to identify curious locations in South Africa, which have resulted in the discovery of important historical findings that affect all humans everywhere on our planet," said Michael Jones, chief technology advocate at Google.
